MY TEMPORARY LIFE by MARTIN CROSBIE
Genre:  Romantic, Suspense
Price: $3.99
Where to Get It:

“It has everything, simply everything-a coming of age, a romance, and a thriller rolled into one delightful read.
8
From the very first sentence, we’re drawn into the harsh Scotland schoolboy world of Malcolm and Hardly. Malcolm’s summers in Canada with his mother offer little comfort. He survives by running; running through the streets, running between Scotland and Canada, running from himself and his past.
Flash ahead 20 years. In Canada, Malcolm meets Heather, a woman haunted by an evil secret. When they camp at the Lake at the end of the World, they discover there is nowhere left to run, for either of them.
Like the great 19th century writers (but with a lighter touch), Martin Crosbie takes Malcolm from a life focused on the primary needs of food, sex and basic survival to loftier aspirations. He enters an intangible, often illusory world of evil that requires enormous human faith; and tosses the reader onto a thrilling rollercoaster ride. Again and again he refuses to walk away from heart hammering danger.
8
Mr. Crosbie’s deft character-development pen never allows the reader to question Malcolm’s choices. He has prepared for this journey since his boyhood days in Scotland. This time, he’s not backing down, whatever the cost.”
8
There were moments of magic, scenes filled with foreboding, passages that were poetic and ruminative, others that were breathtaking. The masterful handling of Malcolm’s mother, was brilliant. There were many scenes, especially toward the end, that were fast-paced and made the book impossible to put down.”

A story of life, love, and a journey of a thousand years…
*
It was Monday, May 19th, 1975. I’ll never forget that day. The Vietnam War had ended with the fall of Saigon that April, and the world was mired in one of its worst recessions ever. Unemployment in the United States was nearly nine percent, inflation even higher, and leadership lacking. The Watergate scandal had cast a smear across American politics, resulting in Richard Nixon’s resignation in August 1974 to avoid impeachment, and his successor’s immediately pardoning him to close the book on an unhappy chapter in U.S. history.
*
It was not a good time for anyone and a particularly hard time for the old Victorian town of Cape May. The crown jewel of the New Jersey shore had fallen into neglect and disrepair and was dying a slow death. Once the elegant summer home to presidents and kings, it had become the last refuge of the deposed.
*
That’s where I met Tom Ryan. Tom was a king, or so he would have you believe, but unlike Richard Nixon, when Tom was dethroned, he wasn’t sent home with a slap on the wrist. He was sent to prison. He was a convicted draft dodger, but one of the lucky ones released early by President Ford as part of his mass clemency after Nixon’s pardon. The problem was, Tom had nowhere to go when he got out, so he took the money his dad mailed to him and spent it on a bus ticket to get as far away as possible to a place where nobody cared who he was or what he had done, a place where nobody cared about anything. That place was Cape May.
&
As hard a time as it was for everyone, it was harder for me because that was the day I met Tom Ryan. I should have turned and walked away. I knew it when he first looked at me, but I didn’t, not my first mistake, but one that would make Monday, May 19th, 1975 the hardest day of my life.
*
This is the story of how Tom Ryan and I met and how things never quite work out the way you think. You might find a love story in here somewhere. You might not. You might find a message hidden in one of the nickel pop bottles collected by the beachcombers from some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the world. You might even find a little mystery, but life is a mystery, isn’t it?

*
Cole Manning, a Union lieutenant serving during the height of the  American Civil War, expects a letter from his best girl who promised to wait for  him.  But her post contains an unwelcome surprise.   Heartbroken,  he vows no woman will ever fool him again.

*
Claire Hirsch’s fiancé died  in battle during the first year of the war.  Scarred by his death, she  realizes loving a soldier can only lead to heartache.  Not wanting to sit  home and mourn, she volunteers to assist doctors in the camps.

*
As  the war rages around them, Cole and Claire find solace in each other’s arms. But  is their love strong enough to overcome the fear of losing the one they  love?

*
What they’re saying about it:

“The plot was intriguing, and had  great attention to detail for the men on the front line and how they battled  their way through day after day. I really liked the dialogue between both the  heroine and heroine, as well as how they interacted with the secondary  characters because it revealed quite well how a nurse handled the pressures of  looking after a soldier when he was wounded and how protective the soldiers were  of each other when dealing with the enemy. The sex scenes were great and just  right for Claire didn’t have any experience when it came to men, so Cole treated  her perfectly….this tale of times at war and romance has given me a love for  the Historical genre, and I can’t wait to read more books like this one in the  future.” ~ The Romance Studio

When Civil War reenactor, Kyle Dalton, keeps seeing a  beautiful woman on the battlefield tending to soldiers, he thinks she’s another  reenactor. But when she disappears into thin air, he starts to believe he’s seen  a ghost. Did he have a past life with this woman?
*
What they’re saying  about it:
*
Dreaming Josie is such an incredible read. I loved it and was  sorry to see it end. Loved learning about the Civil War re-en-actors. But the  best part was the love between Josie and Kyle that came through time. Such a  romantic story.
*
I loved Dreaming Josie. It’s a great love story with  paranormal elements. I love the way Ms. Macatee switches between the present  time and the past. The switches are done seamlessly and kept me reading. I  couldn’t put this book down. The information about the Civil War reenacters is  very interesting. I wish I could have gotten to know the present-day heroine a  little better. This book is too short. I wanted to keep reading. This would make  an excellent full-length novel if the author chose to do that. I highly  recommend Dreaming Josie.

What they’re saying:
(
“Killer at the Door is a macabre collection of eight short stories, each with either a touch of murder and mayhem. Vickie Britton and Loretta Jackson, sisters who co-author, have put together an awesome collection of short stories. While reading, I felt as if I were being held in a mind puzzle. Is it him? Is it her? Who the heck do you believe? I wanted to yell, “No! Don’t trust him!” or “Run! He’s the murderer!” I never knew who was going to turn out to be the killer. All the short stories are cleverly written by this duo. My only complaint is that I didn’t want them to end!

Bargain eBooks #704:

Spirited Away: A Novel of the Stolen Irish by Maggie Plummer
Genre: historical fiction
Price: $2.99
Where to Get It:
Amazon (Kindle)
*
*
*
It’s  May 1653. When young Frederica (Freddy) O’Brennan and her sister Aileen trust a  stranger on an empty beach in western Ireland, they inadvertently place  themselves in the crosshairs of Cromwell’s notorious Reign of Terror. Freddy  awakens in the crammed hold of a slave ship bound for Barbados. She and Aileen endure  the gruesome voyage only to be wrenched apart when purchased at auction by sugar  plantation owners from different islands. Freddy is left alone to face the  brutal realities of life as a female Irish slave on a seventeenth century Barbados plantation. As she struggles to survive the ordeal, Freddy’s harrowing  experiences paint an intimate, compelling portrait of 1650s Irish and African  slavery in the Caribbean.
*
What they’re saying about it:
*
Review by Phyllis  Walker: “This novel is a historical glimpse of the Irish slave trade in  the 1650’s, a topic I’ve seldom ever heard mentioned. I was unaware of the  plight of so many innocent Irish who were taken and sold as slaves because of  Cromwell’s hatred. Maggie Plummer has created characters so real, you can’t help  but become emotionally invested in them. Her description of Ireland gives a  clear backdrop for the reader to experience the shock, rage and fear of the main  character, Freddy, as she is taken from homeland and family. Unforgettable  scenes continue as Freddy is sold to a sugar plantation owner as both a working  and breeding slave.
*
“Reading about the greed and heartless cruelty that  kept the slave trade profitable was difficult, but the friendships among the  slaves of different nationalities kept it from being overpowering. Plummers  descriptions of the squalor of Barbados, the beauty of the Caribbean, and the  resilience of the human spirit, are well done as she weaves the historical facts  in with the characters of her own creation. Readers are left with faces and  personalities for only a few of the 100,000 whose lives were taken by the Irish  slave trade, but will find themselves fiercely determined, as I was, to fight  the human trafficking of our world today.”

Literal Addiction:
Like book #1, there were plenty of twists and turns to keep me flipping pages  frantically to find out what would happen next. Like in book #1 as well, the  characters were well developed and force the reader to feel for them, one way or  another.
*
Shalena Douthit:
This is a book that I have to remind myself, “breathe”. Genevieve continues to search out her mom while fighting for true love. Will it be William or Joseph?
