As the United States enters World War II, military commanders send their best officers to set up an amphibious training camp on Florida’s desolate Gulf coast. Major Occam Goodwin anticipates challenges—swamps, snakes, alligators, hurricanes—and the daunting task of turning twenty thousand green recruits into warriors. But when his surveyors discover a murdered black family deep in the forest, he must dance delicately around military politics, and a race war that threatens the entire war effort.
*
Here, in this harsh but mystically beautiful land, young recruits test themselves to the limit in love and combat; politicos and tycoons offer aid with one eye to profit; women patrol the coast on horseback, looking for German subs; a postmaster’s daughter, the only child on base, inspires thousands; a determined woman bravely holds together her family and the emotional soul of the camp. Amid tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the soldiers and their country hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to find his destiny.
&
Based on the true story of Camp Gordon Johnston, this novel is about young men on the brink of war, and a country on the brink of civil rights, a tale of soldiers and officers, daughters and mothers, death and redemption, and a man unyielding in his integrity, compassion, and struggle for justice.

OpenBookSociety Review Brought to you by OBS reviewer Angie:
*
“This was an amazing journey that I literally couldn’t put down. I wasn’t sure about reading a book about Angels and heaven. I’m wary of things that are too “preachy” but this book is probably the furthest thing from that. I started reading at 9:00 pm and didn’t put the book down til I was finished at 4:00 am.
*
Waters has spent countless hours researching the eras she writes about. The writing was amazing. I was transported throughout the world and had vivid images of the settings of all the stories. I was moved to tears in more than one story. In the end I didn’t feel preached to at all, but I did have a completely different perspective on what the afterlife might be like. I have to read Infinite Devotion (book #2) immediately!”

*****LIMITED TIME BARGAIN PRICE***** Enjoy four stories in this boxed set with Splendid Summer’s romantic detectives, Grace and Jack, and magical cats.
*
Magical white cat Tatania helps her human operatives solve mysteries without missing a nap. In Splendid Summer, when Grace Wentworth loses her last living relative and all her money, hot Detective and WWI Aviator Jack Brewster gets the case. Grace is learning to lead her own life instead of just following it around. Startled by Grace’s lack of deference to him, Jack recognizes his romantic equal.
*
In Emeralds, Diamonds and Amethysts, Jack, Grace, and magical Tatania battle bootleggers to find a special collection of jewels. Emeralds, Diamonds, and Ametheysts is about a code known only to women who fight for the rights of all women.
One reviewer called A Christmas Feral a story that would do Charles Dickens proud. Judge Scrooge won’t even heat his home for Christmas in this Roaring Twenties’ short story. Judge Scrooge says that when you pay the bill, you don’t feel the cold. When Judge Scrooge rules incorrectly in a cat dispute, Tatania and her companion Zeus teach him the meaning of keeping Christmas and cats.
*
In Cher Ami, two people drop dead within minutes of each other. They appear unrelated. Grace, Jack, Tatania and Zeus reveal the story of Cher Ami, a WWI carrier pigeon with the heart of a lion. With his heart still beating in a badly wounded body, Cher Ami soared above bullets and saved a lost battalion.
^
What they’re saying about it:
“This 4 story set was an easy read. The descriptions of flights in the early open planes were great! An independent young woman ahead of her time and standing up for herself against financial bad times made a pleasing main character. Some of the detective skills may have been a little more modern than of that time, but they added to the validity of the stories’ conclusions. The cats were great and I would have liked a little more of their “magical” qualities.”

For a thousand years, Excalibur has been the sword of heroes.  Unfortunately, its new owner isn’t one.
&
Henry of Sanbruc, medieval smartass, makes a pretty good living selling “magic” swords to gullible knights. When he’s forced to steal the real thing from the Chapel Perilous, his troubles are only beginning: For Excalibur is not just the sword of heroes…it’s also the sword that won’t SHUT UP. It communicates with its owner, it knows what kind of owner it deserves, and Henry doesn’t even come close.
&
To keep Excalibur and the world safe from the appalling Geoffrey Plantagenet, Henry will have to masquerade as a knight, crash a royal wedding, rescue a princess, break a siege, penetrate the secrets of the Perilous Brotherhood, and find Excalibur’s rightful bearer, all while trying to reach an accommodation with a snotty, aristocratic hunk of steel that mocks him, takes over his body, and keeps trying to turn him into the one thing he hates most…a hero.
*
What They’re Saying About It:
^
“The Wrong Sword delivers many laugh-out-loud moments, and the conniving Henry is more real and likeable than perhaps even King Arthur himself” – Sarah Zaske, YA Fantastic Book Review
^
“It’s a clean, light, hilarious read.” – Anna Frost’s Den
^
“The Wrong Sword is a wonderful twist on the legend of Excalibur. It is filled with enough magic, humor, and danger to satisfy the most adventurous spirit. Fans of young adult fantasy should certainly give The Wrong Sword a try.” – Long and Short Reviews
