Twelve-year-old Helga has more danger in her life than most beasts her age. Wrackshee slavers after her, a vicious attack by bandits that nearly kills her, a race against dragons pursuing her, and leading a daring rebellion to save her life, and rescue friends and family, from the insidious WooZan. And that is just the beginning. But what do you expect when you are a young beast who just can’t see the stupid rules of the world making any sense? Helga can’t accept things as they are and ends up taking on not just one, but two all-powerful, supreme tyrants in two different realms.

Helga never intended to lead a revolution. It just sort of happened because she wouldn’t go along with the “rules of normal” that keep tyrants in power and entire societies enslaved. Beginning on a dangerous quest to solve some mysteries in her own past, Helga leads her quirky comrades on a journey that will not only forever change them, but upset ancient civilizations.

Time and again, the unconventional heroine and her eccentric comrades overcome ominous tyrants and black-hearted slavers, not by battling to the last beast standing, but by being the first beast to think differently.

Helga: Out of Hedgelands is divided into three books which introduce the epic saga of the Wood Cow clan and their role in overturning centuries of slavery and tyranny. This story will continue in additional volumes of the Wood Cow Chronicles now in development. Over the series of current and future volumes, the entire history of the Wood Cow clan, the fall of Maev Astuté, and the coming of Lord Farseeker to the Outer Rings, will be told.

What they’re saying about it:

“Since completing the Lord of the Rings trilogy in college, I’ve looked forward to a fantasy series that exhibited the potential to keep me up reading well past my bed time. Helga, Out of Hedgelands, did just that. Mr Johnson has created a fascinating world full of vivid landscapes and characters wise and courageous enough to inhabit them. Helga is a tale for young and old alike. Pour yourself a hot cup of Peskee tea and gather round your children or grandchildren. You’re in for a treat. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment.”–Steve Kaufman

Orphan Jack Templar has  no memory of his parents and only the  smallest details from his Aunt  Sophie about how they died. The day  before Jack’s fourteenth birthday,  things start to change for him. At  first it’s great: A sudden new  strength helps him defend his  nose-picking friend “T-Rex” from the  school bully, and even his crush,  Cindy Adams, takes notice. But then a  mysterious girl named Eva arrives and tells him two facts that will  change his life forever. First, that he’s the descendent of a long line  of monster hunters and he’s  destined to be in the family business.  Second, that there’s a truce  between man and monster that children are  off-limits…until their  fourteenth birthday! Jack has only one day  before hundreds of monsters  will descend on his little town of Sunnyvale  and try to kill him.

As if that weren’t enough, things get even  more complicated when  Jack discovers that the Lord of the Creach (as  the monsters are  collectively known) holds a personal grudge against him  and will do  anything to see that Jack has a slow and painful death. To  stay alive  and save his friends, Jack will have to battle werewolves,  vampires,  harpies, trolls, zombies and more. But perhaps the most  dangerous thing he must face is the truth about his past. Why do the  other hunters  call him the last Templar? Why do they whisper that he may  be the  “One?” Why do the monsters want him dead so badly?  Even as  these  questions plague him, he quickly discovers survival is his new   full-time job and that in the world of monster hunters, nothing is   really what it seems.

What they’re saying about it:

“Gunhus brings young readers a monster-filled romp to read at their own risk.” Kirkus Reviews

“Move over Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, there’s a new kid in town – Jack Templar, and he will take you on a wonderful adventure of good vs  evil, with friends and enemies at every turn.” Penny Brien

“This quick read allows you to let your imagination soar!” Gloria Frost

Michaela’s Gift by Cordelia Dinsmore

Michaela Cochran and her family make the trip to her father’s ancestral home every year, but this year is special. Michaela is now twelve, the age when every girl in the family receives a special gift. When Aunt Sharon explains that Michaela’s gift is a magical ability to bring one of her drawings to life, Michaela begins making plans. What she wants most is a castle high on the mountain, where her family can live together. But if she can’t figure out how to resolve the growing hostility between herself and her mother, her gift is meaningless.
*
What they’re saying about it:
*
“This was a very sweet story. Almost twelve-year-old Michaela makes her yearly trip to visit her grandparents at her father’s ancestral home in the mountains. Very interesting (unexpected) things happen there, and as is the custom for the twelve-year-old girls in her family, she’s about to receive a gift. (But not an ordinary gift; this one has a bit of magic attached).
*
Michaela and her mother butt heads, as many mothers and daughters do. She seems like a realistic pre-teen who wants to be independent but who still needs her mother. And there are a few mysteries that the reader wants to get to the bottom of. (Like, why are there ghosts in a certain room?) I don’t want to spoil the plot here, but I will say that the story was unique and held my interest. I think this book would work especially well for readers aged 8 to 12.”
